Chinatown, a unique role

posted by:

Having studied about chinatown in a particularly small area in Indonesia in my master’s thesis, I gained some basic knowledge minority enclave. Even though it is still far from giving a hint of what is happening inside Chinatown, some books have reported there are certain conditions about Chinatown in their own point of interest. Yet, the most difficult task is probably relating their behavior pattern to the setting. What factor may arouse certain behavior and what may suppress and why is such a huge task to accomplish. But I will just focus on the behavior that relates to the front settings (façade and front space). Appropriate method is necessary to fulfill this task that will be discussed in the following paragraphs.

Probably as many people or many visitors know that chinatown is unique in that they are promoting ethnical identity and stuffs as to marking their territory. Therefore, chinatown is full of chinese-related things, chinese food, chinese massage, chinese accessories, chinese clothes, chinese decoration, and chinese people, absolutely. Even if the person is not purely chinese, in order to get there to perhaps working, they will just pretend to be chinese, or selling chinese goods or cooking chinese food, and speaking chinese. They put chinese decorations in their houses, restaurants, and shops to advertise and attract people. I am referring to chinatown in yokohama.

This behavior supports the idea of chinese as tourism destination. Even if not all the shops or restaurants do similar thing, it is still a clue of what has happening in chinatown. They are advertising themselves. Now going deeper to the idea of chinese as tourism destination. What other behaviors support this notion is going to be listed after a careful observation and interview. These all behaviors shall reveal the pattern in chinatown yokohama as tourism spot. Then the players are broken down into several categories, both can show which is being active and passive that probably will determine the ups and downs of chinatown. Perhaps this can be derived from previous studies on chinatown.

Next task is how they particularly show what behavior, and when and for what purpose in the setting. This shall be presented with pictures and since pattern of behavior links to the environment, including time and space, this shall be presented as a whole picture. This shall connect the chinatown in many different places in regards to their unique role as perhaps different in every city. For now this is the notion about chinatown in its unique role.

Behavior pattern in chinatown

posted by:

Finally I came up with this topic, behavioral pattern in chinatown. I’ve been dealing with behavior in many ways, yet interesting is the difference between behavior and behavioral. One is noun while the other is adjective respectively. Later it will be revealed what differences in both. (I’m beginning to feel dozy but my lab mate interrupted me so I am awaken again). Well, the obvious question is what has happened inside chinatown and why people want to know about chinatown or want to come to chinatown. this is what my research put as the entry questions.

First, I want to answer these entry questions. Why people want to know about chinatown is partly because it is mysterious and secretive (Zhou), interesting (but this is after one interact with chinatown), or famous (why it is becoming famous is answered in another study by Yamashita). Why people want to come to chinatown is related to the study of why it is becoming famous. But this is still so confusing or out of focus of my field of study. I’m still figuring out how to drag every information to the behavioral pattern or behavior pattern.

Second, I will try to answer question of why I want to study about chinatown. from my own interest, chinatown is still mysterious even after it is becoming more and more famous. The essence of chinatown is not in their appearance. From the general point of view, chinatown has been the critical problems in many places associated with culture or ethnical issue or political issue. Actually, there have been many associations to chinatown. research on behavioral pattern in chinatown is probably new and uninteresting because it takes time and quite a proper method to produce the outcome. Yet, behavioral pattern that occur in this area probably is as unique as it relates to the setting. To see/measure the behavior, this study will try to accumulate activities in different times and spaces. This is required careful observation and data collection from the target. How people in chinatown (inhabitants, workers, visitors, passers by, etc) interact to each other in respond to the given setting is my point of interest.

But as my friend said, what is important about it? What notion is related to it that is interesting. One thing that I can conclude from my own observation through the years is that similar behavior no matter how where and how they put it, chinatown has uniqueness in advertising themselves. They serve what is to be the basic needs of society, wherever they are. This is chinese. For example, since they are immigrants to the area, they are becoming more efficient and sensitive to the demand of the mainstream (the majority) in order to live apart from the many shortcomings.

One obvious behavior of advertising is displaying their goods. This is one of targets of this study. When the space is not enough, some goods are displayed outside the shop at the full front. Yet this is interesting is even though it seems that the space is quite available, to compete with the other shops or competitor, they deliberately put many goods to display. but this discussion is hard to derived into a specific topic on chinatown. unless i prove it only happen in chinatown. Or when words do not tell a lot, because of the shortcoming in language, the only way is using the gesture and goods to display. in this case, it is not only chinatown but maybe other places like in korea, or malaysia, or any other place.
